Tom Chaplin

Tom Chaplin is the lead singer of the English piano-rock band, Keane. Keane started out in the mid-90s as "The Lotus Eaters", and was originally intended as a cover band that played U2, Oasis and The Beatles at Sussex pubs. It was put together by Tim Rice-Oxley and Dominic Scott, as well as drummer Richard Hughes.
Chaplin had known Rice-Oxley, since childhood in Roberstbridge, and Richard Hughes, he'd meet in Tonbridge School. The Lotus Eaters started out in 1995, but it wasn't until 1997, that Chaplin joined the band as lead vocalist. By then, the band had changed its name to Cherry Keane. Obviously, the "cherry" would later be removed from the name. ("Cherry Keane" actually refers to a friend of Chaplin's mother) and Scott would eventually leave Keane in 2001 over amicable creative differences. The rest is pretty much history and Keane is one of today's most successful bands known for their epic scope and distinct sound (although they are occasionally criticized for sounding a little too similar to Coldplay, particularly in their early work). Chaplin's vocals and organ and acoustic guitar-playing is also notable in that respect. On August 22, 2006, Chaplin revealed that he was receiving treatment for alcohol and drug abuse problems.
